1 So where is everyone? In this lesson, well see how people are spread unevenly around the world.

2 There are about 6 billion people in the world. Most of them however, live on only a third of the land surface. Some parts of the world are very crowded and others are almost empty. Look at the clip and think about why this is so. clip There are many reasons for this. People do not like to live in places which are too wet or too dry, too hot or too cold. Nor do they like places that are mountainous, lack vegetation, are densely forested or likely to flood.

3 Density means how crowded a place is. Places which are crowded are said to be densely populated and to have a high population density. Places with few people are said to be sparsely populated and to have a low population density.

4 Take the USA for example. Some parts are sparsely populated, whilst others are densely populated.USA

5 This helps explain this map. The map shows how we are spread or distributed around the world.
