SER y ESTAR TO BE or not TO BE….. That is the question.

SER– to be Use SER to refer to a permanent, or relatively permanent, condition. SER: –states identity and professions (name, gender, job) –describes people and things (height, coloring, weight, beauty, personality) –describes the origin of a person or thing. –Time, date, season

ESTAR– to be Use ESTAR to refer to a temporary or current condition. ESTAR: describes location (“My wallet is in my purse.”) describes emotions and physical conditions (I am tired, happy, sad, sick)

SER– to be (relatively permanent) 1. soy I am 4. somos We are 2. eres You are (familiar) 5. sois Y’all are (familiar) 3. es He/she/it is You are (formal) 6. son They are All of you are (formal)

ESTAR– to be (temporary) 1. estoy I am 4. estamos We are 2. estás You are (familiar) 5. estáis Y’all are (familiar) 3. está He/she/it is You are (formal) 6. están They are All of you are (formal)
