2 INTRODUCTION What motivates you? –Success, money, standing out –Creating change, volunteering How do we motivate as managers? Typical employee brings 60% of self to work. –How do we ask for more?

3 SUMMARY Two models can sum up issues of employee motivation: 1) Need for Achivement N-Ach Model 2) J. Stacy Adams Equity Theory

4 N-Ach Model – Achievement, Power, Affiliation Achievement -Managers should provide employees with achievable challengers -If employee fails, exercise becomes counterproductive Power -Empowerment and autonomy Affiliation -Collaboration by hanging out

5 J. Stacey Adams Equity Theory -Is it fair between you and me? -Employee contributions / Rewards = Referent contributions/rewards -Salary is ineffective motivator

6 EXERCISE ONE – Iceberg Psychological Contract 1.Ask employees to list motivators in the workplace. -Consider work environment, training, tangible rewards 2.List areas in which you would like employee contribution 3.On Iceberg diagram, consider areas that are above and below water -Visibility to employees and employer

8 EXERCISE TWO – Thank Yous To All For entire day, specifically thank each employee at least once At end of week, reflect on employee morale Has the environment in your workplace changed for the better?
