Europe Part II Issues: Population & Pollution
3
Population Changes Before 1750 - Population rose and fell Slightly more births than deaths After 1750 - Population ↑ (WHY?) Industrial Revolution - Mass production of goods Sanitation ↑ Health Care ↑ Food Supplies ↑ People move to cities for jobs Need large families for farming No need in cities
4
E’s Population Shrinkage Women wait to have kids to be educated/have careers Family planning methods - control births High cost of living HOUSING COSTS ↑ Need 2 incomes to purchase house Childcare is Expensive The more kids you have the more money you have to pay
5
E’s Population Woes 1. Fewer Children means: ↓ Students = ↓ Teacher = ↓ Schools Businesses for kids go out of business ➔ affects sales of regular businesses 2. Less Workers Businesses move to countries w/higher pop. Less soldiers for military - Country weakens 3. Older Population - Cannot Work
6
Aging Population
7
Possible Solutions Birth Bonuses - Money for having kids Reduced taxes and rent Pay for daycare Paid leave when a baby is born Flexible working hours Aging Raise Retirement Age Cut pensions (retirement money)
8
Pollution Acid Rain Rain contains acid from factory smoke & car exhaust Can damage plants, fish, animals, buildings Transboundary pollution Pollution that moves across country borders Black Triangle - German/Polish/Czech Border Major source of air pollution/acid rain Many factories
