BASKETBALL

The object of the game is to score the greatest number of baskets in the allotted time limit.
A HIGH SCHOOL game consists of four eight minute quarters.

Each team has five players and the game is begun with a jump ball in the center restraining circle.

Scoring Field Goal – A goal made anywhere inside the three-point line. ( worth 2 points) Three-point field goal – A goal made anywhere on the court beyond the three-point line. (worth 3 points)

Scoring Con’t Free throw – An unguarded throw for goal by a player after a foul. It is taken behind the free throw line and the shooter has ten seconds to release the attempt.

Scoring When you are fouled in the act of shooting, a player receives two free throws if the attempt at the goal is missed. You receive three free throws for a three point attempt. If the basket is made, the shooter receives one free throw. ( Worth 1 point)

Passing Moving the ball by throwing, bouncing, batting, handing, or rolling it to another player. Three types of passing: Chest Pass Bounce Pass Overhead Pass

Shooting Throwing the ball so as to make a goal.
Hand Position: One hand behind the ball, other hand balances and guides the ball.

Fouls Blocking - an individual foul involving personal contact which impedes the progress of an opponent with or without the ball. Personal Foul-illegal contact with an opponent.

Fouls Con’t Holding – A player holds an opponent with or without the ball. Charging – a player with the ball moves into an opponent whose position is legal.

VIOLATIONS Traveling – moving illegally with the ball.
Three second lane violation – An offensive player with or without the ball remains in the free throw lane (key) for more than three seconds.

VIOLATIONS Double Dribble- This occurs when a player continues dribbling after grasping the ball with both hands. Out of bounds – the ball is out when it touches any person or object on or beyond the boundary lines.

Terms Dead ball – the ball is dead whenever the whistle is blown.
Goal – a ball that passes through the basket from above. Held ball – a player holding the ball for more than five seconds when closely guarded.

Terms Con’t Turnover – any loss of possession without a shot being taken One and one free throw – a free throw situation in which a second free throw is awarded upon a successful attempt on the first free throw

Defense Defending and protecting the basket to prevent an opponent from scoring

Types of Defense Zone Defense – a defensive system in which players cover assigned court areas, rather than specific individuals. Man to Man defense – a defensive system in which each player guards an assigned individual
