4 Example Symbols enrich and add to the meaning to a story. In James Hurst’s “The Scarlet Ibis,” symbols play an integral role in illuminating meaning and reinforcing theme. An exotic blood red Ibis lands in unfamiliar territory. A wild swamp brings joy and new adventure to two brothers. These two distinct symbols provide vivid imagery as well as bring meaning to Hurst’s tragic tale.
