4. Objective: After this lesson students will be able to:
Explain why preparation is important when carrying out scientific investigations in the lab in the field.
Describe what you should do if an accident occurs.
Identify safety icons and explain their meaning.

5. Safety During Investigations
Good preparation helps you stay safe when doing science activities.

6. Preparing for the Lab Begin the day before
Familiarize yourself with the directions/procedures.
If anything is unclear, ask questions!

7. Performing the Lab Follow instructions exactly.
Never try anything on your own without asking Ms. Galan first.
Keep work area clean and organized.
Don’t rush! Take your time!

8. End of Lab Procedures Clean-up your work area.
Turn off and unplug any equipment that’s not being used.
Throw away waste in it’s proper receptacle.
Sharp objects do NOT go into the regular trash can!
Wash your hands thoroughly!

9. General Safety Follow the specific instructions provided.
Do not perform any investigations without Ms. Galan!

10. General Safety Take care not to spill material in the lab.
Clean up spills immediately.
NEVER eat, drink, or bring food into lab.

Immediately report all accidents to Ms. Galan, no matter how small.
Report any fire at once.

13. Dress Code
Wear safety goggles when handling chemicals, burners, or any substance that may get in your eyes.
Wear an apron whenever you work with heat or chemicals.

14. Dress Code Tie back long hair to keep away from flames.
Remove any clothing or jewelry that can hang down into chemicals, flames, and moving parts.

15. Heating and Fire Safety
Never use heat source such as a candle or burner without safety glasses.
Never heat a chemical you are not instructed to heat.
Maintain a clean work area and keep items away from flame.

Never reach across a flame or hot surface.
Make sure you know how to operate a hot plate.
Never leave machines unattended.

When heating test tubes or bottles, never point towards yourself or others.
Never heat a closed container.
Hot air, vapors, or gases may cause it to explode.

Never pick up a container that has been heated without testing it.
Hold the back of your hand near the container. If you can feel the heat, don’t touch it!
Use clamps, tongs, or heat-resistant gloves to handle hot materials.

19. Chemical Safety
Never mix chemicals, without permission from Ms. Galan.
You may produce a dangerous substance or explosion.
Never touch, taste, or smell a chemical that you are unsure if it’s harmless or not.

20. Chemical Safety
Never smell chemicals directly. Wave hand over opening of container to waft fumes toward nose.
Keep all containers closed when not in use.
Dispose of chemicals properly.

21. Chemical Safety
Be careful when working with acids and bases. Pour such chemicals from one container to another over the sink.
When diluting an acid, pour the ACID into WATER. NEVER pour WATER into an ACID.
The acid may splash on you!

22. Chemical Safety
If acids or bases get on skin or clothes, rinse with water immediately. Notify Ms. Galan of any spills!

23. Glassware Safety Never heat glassware that isn’t dry.
Always check glassware to see if its hot before picking it up.

24. Glassware Safety Never use broken or chipped glassware.
If you notice or accidently break glassware, notify Ms. Galan and deposit in proper container.
Never eat or drink from lab glassware.
Clean glassware before putting it away.

25. Live Organisms Safety
No experiments that cause pain, discomfort, or harm to animals should be done in the classroom or at home.
Follow instructions completely. Special handling is required when animal is scared, pregnant, feeding, or with its young.
Wash hands well!!!

Wash your hands immediately after lab.

NEVER inhale vapors.

34. Breakage Symbol Handle breakables with care
Glassware: Beakers, test tubes, etc.
Don’t touch broken glassware.

35. Sharp Object Symbol Handle scalpels and other sharp objects with care.
ALWAYS cut AWAY from you.
Notify Ms. Galan immediately if you cut yourself, no matter how SMALL!

36. Animal Safety
Treat live or preserved animals with care to avoid harming the animal or yourself.
Wash hands after lab.
Wear gloves when handling or dissecting animals.

37. Plant Safety
If you are allergic to certain plants, tell Ms. Galan immediately.
Avoid touching harmful plants with bare hands.
Wash hands!

38. Electrical Shock Physical Safety
Never use equipment around water or when hands are wet.
Untangle cords that could trip someone.
Unplug equipment when not in use.
Physical Safety
Be cautious of your surroundings to avoid injury.

39. Disposal
Dispose of chemicals and other materials into their proper waste basket.
Hand Washing
Wash hands well after EVERY lab activity.
Use soap and warm water. Rinse well!
