Why are the standards changing? The Goal of Common Core is to Prepare Students to be College and Career Ready Upon Graduation

5. Why are the standards changing? Provide rigor for all groups of students To ensure students are better prepared for a global economy. To engage all students in the learning process. The old focus was on facts and memorization. The new focus is on teaching students higher level thinking skills.

Shared Responsibility for Students’ Literacy Development “The Standards insist that instruction in reading, speaking, listening, and language be a shared responsibility within the school” (p. 4). “This division reflects the unique time-honored place of ELA teachers in developing students’ literacy skills while at the same time recognizing that teachers in other areas must have a role in this development as well” (p. 4).
