Why are the standards changing? The Goal of Common Core is to Prepare Students to be College and Career Ready Upon Graduation

5 Why are the standards changing? Provide rigor for all groups of students To ensure students are better prepared for a global economy. To engage all students in the learning process. The old focus was on facts and memorization. The new focus is on teaching students higher level thinking skills.

6 Shared Responsibility for Students’ Literacy Development “The Standards insist that instruction in reading, speaking, listening, and language be a shared responsibility within the school” (p. 4). “This division reflects the unique time-honored place of ELA teachers in developing students’ literacy skills while at the same time recognizing that teachers in other areas must have a role in this development as well” (p. 4).
