3. Stanhope: “Damn the soup! Bring some Whisky!” Page 17 This shows that Stanhope doesn’t care about being nice towards Mason, and when Mason is offering to go a get Stanhope’s meal for him, Stanhope shouts at him and just tells him to go and get him some whiskey.

4. Mason: “It -it was missed, sir. Stanhope: “Why?” Mason: “Well, sir, I left it to-” Stanhope: “Then I advise you never to leave it to anyone else again- unless you want to rejoin your platoon out there” Page 19 When Mason says that he hadn’t packed any pepper he is shouted at by Stanhope and is told not to leave packing things to other soldiers.

5. Mason: “Meat, sir.” Trotter: “I know that. What sort?” Mason: “Sort of cutlet, sir.” Trotter: “Sort of cutlet, is it? You know Mason, there’s cutlets and cutlets.” Page 21 Trotter tries to make jokes with Mason even though he knows that he won’t understand them.

6. Trotter: “Well, there’s nothing like a good fat bacon rasher when you’re as empty as I am.” Mason: “I’m glad you like it fat, sir.” Trotter: “Well I like a bit o’ lean, too.” Mason: “There was a bit of lean in the middle of yours, sir, but it’s kind of shrunk up in the cooking.” Trotter : “Bad cooking, that’s all.” Page 32 When Mason brings Trotter his bacon in the morning Trotter tells him that his cooking isn’t very good, even though Mason tries quite hard to cook for the officers.

8. Mason: “Only I thought I’d tell you, sir, so as the captain wouldn’t blame me.” Osborne: “All right Mason” Page. 17 Mason tells Osborne his problem so that he doesn’t get told off by Stanhope. This shows that he can trust Osborne.

9. Mason: “I’m sorry about the apricots, sir. I explained to Mr Osborne” Stanhope: “That’s all right, Mason – thank you.” Page. 23-25 Mason thinks Stanhope is going to be angry with him, but actually he does not tell Mason off at all, he actually thanks him.

10. Stanhope: “Pure bloody funk, that’s all.” Page. 25 Stanhope treats all the officers quite badly, so its not just Mason, this is because he is drunk the majority of the time.

11. Osborne: ‘I wrote and asked my wife for a packet of Lux. Then I gave it to Mason and suggested he tried in on something.” Trotter: “Good man. No, he’s not a bad cook.” Osborne: ‘He’s not a bad cook.” Page. 32 Page. 33 Osborne and Trotter both praise Mason, by saying he is quite a good cook, Osborne has also had something sent from home to help Mason out, this shows that he does actually care for him.

12. Mason: “I’d like to come along with you if you don’t mind, sir. I ain’t been up in this part of the front line. Don’t want to get lost. Stanhope: “Mr. Hibbert’ll show you the way up. Page 98 Stanhope lets Mason have the responsibility of going up into the trenches with Hibbert.
