Overview Of Career Diagnose illnesses, prescribe treatments, and examining patients are all parts of being a physician/surgeon. You also perform, order, and interpret diagnostic tests. There are two types of doctors, Medical Doctor (M.D.) and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.); both deal with surgery. D.O.’s deal more with the musculoskeletal system, preventive medicine, and holistic patient care. Many work in small offices or clinics, surgeons work mainly in hospitals or surgical outpatient centers.

Key Requirements You must have a desire to serve patients, self- motivated, able to survive pressures and long hours of the medical practice. Also, you need bedside manner, emotional stability, and ability to make decisions in emergencies. Responsibility is a large requirement since you have to be in control.

Subjects and Education Science and Health classes are very important. Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology; anything health related. You must pass a test known as the USMLE. To be eligible you must graduate from an accredited medical school. You need up to 7 years of residency training. After the residency training you take a final exam within 2 years.

Average Salary For surgeons, the average salary is between 280-330 thousand dollars. Earnings vary depending on practice, geographical location, hours you work, skill level, and reputation. Your personality also determines where you stand because a headstrong person is going to get promotions according to the level of trust.

Projected Job Growth Expected increase of 22%. Job’s are supposed to increase faster than any other job due to increase in health needs. By 2018, 144,100 more jobs are supposed to be available in the surgery field.

On the Job Work Correct physical deformities. Repair tissue. Fix bones. Perform preventive surgeries such as removing tumors and amputating legs to prevent spread of cancer. Anything health- related, especially if it deals with illness or injury.

Rural areas with little health-related jobs. Low income areas that are in need of doctors. Places with difficulty attracting workers. Locations with high elderly population, since they are in major need of experienced doctors and medical help. Areas with high pay and low cost of living are also optimum for jobs.
