1 A Career in Genetic Engineering In Livestock
FosterCo Museums of the Universe presents: A Career in Genetic Engineering In Livestock An Interactive Guide created by Daniel Pacheco for the FMUMAS Biotechnology exhibit

2 Introduction to Genetic Engineering in Livestock production
Definition – Genetic Engineering is the process of transferring Genes for a certain trait from one organism to another Application in Livestock: Producers can change how things behave or grow in order to create a better product Click to Learn more

3 Learning about Genetic Engineering in Livestock
Click on one of the following to learn more: If you want to go back to this page, click the Discover Benefits of Genetic Engineering in Livestock. Explore Education Requirements. Learn about work conditions for a Genetic Engineer in Livestock. Find out who their employers are. Learn about how Genetic Engineering relates to Biotechnology The debate of Genetic Engineering Conclusion

4 Education In High School make sure you study Biology and Chemistry
As an Undergraduate study Zoology, Chemistry, Biology and if you can, Genetics. When you move on to Graduate school continue those courses or move on to Genetics, Microbiology or Biochemistry for 4 years for a Bachelor’s Degree After your Bachelor’s study for two more years to get a Masters and 4 more for a Doctoral (PhD.) degree (probably in Genetics). Your salary can very well be judged on your educational experience Some Universities and Colleges have Genetic Engineering courses which would be a great idea (obviously) to take Your Salary can vary based on your educational experience so study ad work hard for your degrees!

5 Benefits of Genetic Engineering in Livestock
Raising animals able to fight diseases better Regulating the growth of animals Developing animals that can produce materials for new drugs and vaccines Modify animals to be better and more efficient (don’t eat as much, make more milk, make leaner meat, grow better etc.) Xenotransplantation (making animals produce organs that can be transplanted into humans) To select gender of animals before they are born.

6 Employers Include: Government employers include agencies such as
Center for disease control National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences Health Canada and Food Inspection Agency Private companies such as: Meat companies (i.e. Maple Leaf Foods, Smithfields Foods) Milk Companies (i.e. Natrel, Lactantia) Egg companies (i.e. Egg Farmers of Ontario, Alberta Egg Producers)

7 Work Conditions Salary. The salary can vary a lot but you would probably get paid in the $60 000s. I wouldn’t expect it to go over $ though. Your salary can vary based on your boss (or employer), educational experience, and where you’re working. Work space. Even though these Genetic Engineers work with farm animals they work in laboratories and sometimes schools. Some associated partners in the process of Genetic Engineering in livestock would be farmers that would raise the animals, Farm research managers would find the right farmers and research assistants would help the Genetic engineer with the info he or she needs. You do a lot of researching, testing and developing your ideas. You would mostly use gene splicing and recombinant techniques to take genes and insert them to an animal (You might use a gene gun). You sometimes work individually but mostly work in small groups.

8 Agricultural Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Livestock.
Biotechnology is the use of really small creatures (microorganisms) in commerce or technology. Genetic engineering is a field of Biotechnology because your using genes in the use of technology. This means That your a Genetic Engineer working in Livestock your career relates to biotechnology. So, Biotechnology in livestock includes Genetic Engineering in Livestock Click here to see a diagram about this.

10 The Debate of Genetic Engineering in Livestock:
Argument for: Argument Against: We can design animals to make new products and solve problems. Using animals to create products is better for the environment. You can get more healthy food (i.e. increasing protein or reducing saturated fat). With this growing population we need animals to grow faster to give us food. Genetic Engineering is unnatural and goes against the laws of nature Not all GM foods have been properly tested We don’t know that much about it and are moving very quickly. The transgenic animals may not turn out as planned and come with unintended consequences.

11 Conclusion It seems that this display is now over and you’ve probably learned a lot about Genetic Engineering in Livestock. Please close this and go back to my wiki. Thank you for taking the time to learn and read about something that I devoted my time and energy into making. It is an extreme pleasure, Daniel Pacheco, Creator of Display
