Personal Curriculum A component of student planning and support for achieving a Diploma and Postsecondary Goals Jane Dezinski – Assistant Director for NC RESA Jackie Knight – Principal, Newaygo High School

Support systems that lead to a Diploma  Effective Education Development Plans (EDP’s) in place for all students  Effective Transition plans for students with an IEP  Drop-out Prevention plan ( includes notifying parents of students who are at-risk for drop-out)  Personal Curriculum

Support systems to a Diploma continued…  Specific Instructional Strategies in all classrooms ( ex. PEAK Learning Systems, Ruby Payne Learning Structures, Robert Marzano Classroom Instruction that Works )  Differentiated Instruction in the General Classroom  Co-teaching – GE and SE teachers

Support systems to a Diploma continued…  Mentoring system for struggling students  Tutorial and Supplemental Educational Supports available to struggling students  Assistive Technology  Alternative Learning Programs  On-line courses….

4 Reasons PC was developed  To modify the curriculum to add more math, science, world languages and ELA than required by the MMC.  For students transferring in to the district from out of state or Non-public Schools that do not follow MMC.  Allow modifications of the Algebra II credit over 2 years and still meet 4 years of math requirements.  Modify MMC content expectations for a student with a disability

How did we get started?  District School board to decide if they want to provide this option for students to meet the MMC.  Establish a committee to develop forms, procedures, and responsibilities for the PC process. (our forms on MAASE Wiki)  Identify district team to participate in actual PC process when requested by parent.

Getting started continued…  Provide professional development for staff involved in the PC process  Pilot PC process  Implement process as requested

Steps to Diploma via PC Step 1: Parent or student with permission of parent requests a Personal Curriculum ( PC ) Step 2 : PC team meets to review student data including EDP and decides on:  How much of the MMC content is practicable  Measurable goals  Alignment with EDP goals  Alignment with IEP

 Step 3: PC team writes agreement and gets signature from superintendent, parent and student.  Step 4; Parent monitors progress through quarterly reports from each teacher of the modified curriculum area.  Student’s IEP identifies supports, accommodations and modifications.  Board of LEA may award a diploma to students completing requirements of PC.
