Review Please get out a piece of paper and answer the following questions. I will come around and stamp each correct answer. Raise your hand with any questions! 1) Evaluate each expression for n = -2, n = 1, and n = 5. A) B) C)
4
Lesson Outline Define: polynomial, terms, monomial, binomial, trinomial, and degree Learn how to write polynomials in descending order and determine its degree Evaluate polynomial expressions
5
Definitions A polynomial is an algebraic expression that is the sum of one or more parts, called terms. This polynomial: x3 - 4x2 + 3x + 1 Has these terms: -2x3 -4x2 3x 1
6
Definitions (cont.) Monomial: one term x 2x3 -2 Binomial: two terms
Trinomial: three terms x + 3x2 – 4x3 x2 – 4x3 + 3
7
Degree The degree of a polynomial is the value of the largest exponent that appears in any term. Try It: What is the degree of the following expressions: A) 2x3 B) -2 C) x D) 2x2 – 7x E) x2 – 4x3 + 3
8
Writing Polynomials Highest degree first
“Writing a polynomial in descending order” EX: x4 + 3x – 2x6 + 5 should be written as: – 2x6 + x4 + 3x + 5
9
Evaluate Polynomial Expressions
Replacement and order of operations are the same as they have been in the past. Try It/In Class Examples: A) Evaluate x3 – x2 + x + 5 for x = 0 and x = -3 B) The volume of a cube can be represented by the equation V = s3, where V = volume and s = the length of a side. Find the volume of a cube with each given side length: 3 inches 1.5 inches 2 cm
