Smoking - some figures ► 1.1 billion smokers in the world today 1.6billion by the year 2025 ► 10 million cigarettes a minute are consumed worldwide ► 15 billion cigarettes are sold each day ► 5 trillion cigarettes are produced and used annually ► 4,000 different chemicals in cigarette smoke can damage the cells and systems of the human body. ► At least 80 chemicals in cigarette smoke can cause cancer cancer ► 5 million deaths worldwide every year By 2020, 10 million deaths worldwide, causing 17.7 per cent of all deaths in developed countries (WHO)

Why people smoke? ► Young people smoke : to look mature to be like their friends to experiment ► Adults smoke : stress and pressures ► Other reasons: to control weight to feel good

How to stop smoking? Everyday is the RIGHT TIME to quit smoking Two factors to determine your success in quitting smoking ► Will – you must have the desire to give up your habit of smoking create a strong will to avoid a smoking relapse. ► Mindset – you must learn about the effects of smoking understand its consequences face the fact that you need to stop smoking follow, finish and maintain a quit smoking plan

How to stop smoking? ► Make a resolution to give up smoking ► Think about why you want to quit and the benefits of quitting ► Set a definite time. Let it be today not the next day! ► Think how to cope with craving or withdrawal symptoms ► Visualise a change to avoid temptation and high-risk situations ► Get all the support ► Understand that breaking habits take time and need regular practice. ► Be aware that there will be a constant temptation to go back and chances of a relapse. Think about the effort that has already been put in and don't look back.
