Welcome Back! Title a page “Do Nows 3/7-3/11” Open your binder to the table of contents Have a sharpened pencil in your hand Get ready to learn!
2
Objective: You will be able to design a solution using the technological design process. Do Now: What do scientists do? Be as specific as possible. Give examples of types of scientists. “Salty Water Cleanup” p. 101 March 7, 2011 6
3
Scientists & Engineers Scientists try to understand how the natural world works. Engineers use science to solve problems for people. video games bridges buildings cars trains buses
4
“Salty Water Cleanup” p. 101 Independently read the introduction What is the problem? Materials to fix the problem: Large #10 can, a 30cm x 30cm piece of aluminum foil, plastic bottles, popsicle sticks, hot plate, plastic cups, tape, and ice
5
One step at a time…#1 Research the Problem: Describe the information needed and how to collect that information. That means…What SCIENCE do you need to research to solve this problem? With your partner, write down as many science ideas as you can.
6
One step at a time…#2 Explore Ideas: Describe several ideas, including any useful scientific concepts. That means…Brainstorm possible solutions. Use science words. Always two or more ideas. With your group, write down at least 2 ideas
7
One step at a time…#3-6 Step 3: Plan Summary = "choose one plan and explain WHY." Step 4: Steps to do the Plan = "like procedures, write out numbered steps" Step 5: Diagram of solution = "must have labels." Step 6: Test Solution = “what will I measure and record? How often?"

Common Problems with the Design Hot plate boils off water Vapor condenses on the bottom of the plastic container Condensate falls back into the saltwater mixture hot plate condensed water falling into saltwater plastic contain er saltwater evaporated water ice full foil cover no. 10 tin can Why will this design never work?
9
“Salty Water Cleanup” p. 101 In groups, FINISH your design. Your design is due at the end of class. You will build your solution tomorrow!
10
Homework Flashcards Add #10 Insulator: a substance that conducts energy very SLOWLY
