Co-Teaching: A Definition Collaborative teaching is a professional partnership between two or more educators that erases traditional boundaries and allows them to make informed decisions when designing, communicating, and monitoring instruction through reflective teaching. - Whitten & Hoekstra, 2002

Complementary Teaching Cycle of Teaching Stage Design: Roles and Responsibilities  lead teacher models organization of the lesson content  lead teacher identifies metacogitive strategies or technology needed for group and individual students to complete the tasks of the lesson  support teacher assists  lead teacher conducts formal teaching Lead Teacher Designs Support Teacher Adds to Design

Complementary Teaching Cycle of Teaching Stage Communication: Roles and Responsibilities  support teacher applies metacognitive components of the lesson with small groups or individuals  support teacher provides content or technological support to lead teacher’s lesson

Complementary Teaching Cycle of Teaching Stage Monitoring: Roles and Responsibilities Lead Teacher Support Teacher  lead teacher uses pre-assessment to determine students’ needs for meta-cognitive or technological support  support teacher assesses students’ skills and facilities self- regulation during the lesson  students use self-assessment as they request assistance during or after a formal lesson

Complementary Teaching Classroom Strategies  Activating prior knowledge  Semantic mapping  Discussion webs  Study Guides  S.L.A.N.T.  Predict, Organize, Search, Summarize, Evaluation (P.O.S.S.E.)  What they know, what they want to know, what they learn (KWL)  Story mapping  Two or Three tier note taking  Keep It Moving

Co-Teaching Models 1.Complementary Teach 2.Station Teach Complementary Station

Station Teaching Cycle of Teaching Stage Design: Roles and Responsibilities  lead teacher and support teacher segment the lesson content  lead teacher and support teacher divide the number of stations in which they are responsible  lead teacher and support teacher plan and organize their station activities Lead Teacher Support Teacher 1 Support Teacher 2 Support Teacher 3

Station Teaching Cycle of Teaching Stage Communication: Roles and Responsibilities  lead teacher and support teacher facilitate learning in segments to small groups or individual at the the station they designed

Station Teaching Cycle of Teaching Stage Monitoring: Roles and Responsibilities  Lead teacher and support teacher use preassessment to determine how students are selected for stations  given the organizational structure and tasks of each station, assessment done by students and teachers can be used during the lesson Lead Teacher Support Teacher 1 Support Teacher 2 Support Teacher 3

Station Teaching Classroom Strategies  highlighting key concepts  providing purpose for reading  provide lesson overview  individual or small group instruction  books-on-tape  pairing students for success  graphic arts  identifying key concepts and terms  manipulatives  hypothesizing  Reflection time

Co-Teaching Models 1.Complementary Teach 2.Station Teach 3.Parallel Teach Complementary Parallel Station

Parallel Teaching Cycle of Teaching Stage Design: Roles and Responsibilities  lead teacher and support teacher collaboratively organize the content of the lesson  lead teacher and support teacher identify strategies and technology needed for group and individual students  lead teacher and support teacher divide the students into two group Lead Teacher Support Teacher

Parallel Teaching Cycle of Teaching Stage Communication: Roles and Responsibilities  lead teacher and support teacher independently deliver the lesson plan to one of the groups  lead teacher and support teacher facilitate learning in their groups Lead Teacher with Half of the Students Support Teacher with Half of the Students

Parallel Teaching Cycle of Teaching Stage Monitoring: Roles and Responsibilities  lead teacher and support teacher each monitor their own group of students  lead teacher and support teacher use post lesson reflection to share their expectations using the same lesson plan with different groups of students Lead Teacher Support Teacher

Parallel Teaching Classroom Strategies  choral reading  think-pair-share  learning style groups  exploring content  small group discussion  scaffolding  direct instruction  sharing-reader’s theater, author’s chair, presentations  test review

Co-Teaching Models 1.Complementary Teach 2.Station Teach 3.Parallel Teach 4.Alternative Teach Complementary Parallel Station Alternative

Alternative Teaching Cycle of Teaching Stage Design: Roles and Responsibilities  lead teacher and support teacher make decisions about the content and organization of the lesson  lead teacher and support teacher determine the appropriate structures for alternative remedial or enrichment lessons that would promote more student learning Lead Teacher Support Teacher

Alternative Teaching Cycle of Teaching Stage Communication: Roles and Responsibilities  lead teacher conducts formal teaching  support teacher implements supplemental activities for small groups, or individuals before or after the formal lesson Lead Teacher Support Teacher (Activating Background Knowledge) Support Teacher (Extension) Support Teacher (Remedial)

Alternative Teaching Cycle of Teaching Stage Monitoring: Roles and Responsibilities  lead teacher and support teacher pre-assess the students to plan for alternative lessons  lead teacher and support teacher assess the students during the formal lesson to identify students who would benefit from the alternative lessons  student self-assessment and/or peer assessment encourages students to articulate their need for alternative forms of instruction Lead Teacher Support Teacher

Alternative Teaching Strategies  Peer-tutoring  Multi-age tutoring  Computer assisted instruction  Creative arts interventions  Reciprocal teaching  Predicting  Portfolios  Note taking  Dramatization  Manipulatives

Co-Teaching Models 1.Complementary Teach 2.Station Teach 3.Parallel Teach 4.Alternative Teach 5.Shared Teach Complementary Parallel Station Alternative Shared

Shared Teaching Cycle of Teaching Stage Design: Roles and Responsibilities  teachers collaboratively organize the lesson content  teachers identify strategies and technology needed for the whole group instruction Lead Teacher 1 Lead Teacher 2

Shared Teaching Cycle of Teaching Stage Communication: Roles and Responsibilities  teachers simultaneously facilitate learning with the whole group  teachers spontaneously exchange lead and support roles throughout the lesson and often make use of more than one of the co- teaching models

Shared Teaching Cycle of Teaching Stage Monitoring: Roles and Responsibilities  must be reflection-in- action to address the needs of the students by switching roles during a lesson Lead Teacher 1 Lead Teacher 2

Quality Indices of Co-Teaching  Ability to choose your co-teaching partner  Flexibility and spontaneity in teaching  Administrative support  Common designing and reflecting time  Close proximity  Teaching to various learning styles  Teaching through differentiated instruction  Balancing theory and practice  Understanding of educational philosophies
