CHAPTER 8 Momentum & Impulse

 Momentum is a product of mass and velocity  Momentum is a vector (magnitude and direction)  p = m v  Measured in kg m/s

Change in Momentum: Impulse  When a mass is accelerated its momentum is changed:  p   p = m  v = F t  Impulse is a product of force and time  Impulse is a vector  Impulse is measured in kgm/s or N s

Conservation of Momentum  The total momentum of a closed system (no outside impulses) remains constant  Momentum Before = Momentum After  p 1 + p 2 = p 1 ’ + p 2 ’

Collisions  Momentum is conserved  Momentum before: m 1 v 1 + m 2 v 2  Momentum after: m 1 v 1 ’ + m 2 v 2 ’  Momentum before = Momentum after

Collisions in 2D  Momentum is a vector  Vector sum prior to collision equals vector sum after collision  REMEMBER: This is NOT an arithmetic problem
