Summary vs. Analysis Step 1: Describe what you see (SUMMARIZE) Step 2: Consider the TONE of the painting. How does it make you FEEL? Step 3: Find EVIDENCE in the painting (color, figures, lines, facial expressions) to support your claim about the tone.

Friendship Summary: “George and Lennie are friends.” Analysis: “The friendship of George and Lennie shows that in a world full of self-interested, selfish people, good people still exist.” (tell WHY friendship is important)

Clarisse McClellan Summary: What does she LOOK LIKE? Do? Say? Analysis: WHY?? What is her motivation? What does she WANT? Why is she in the book? How does she affect others?
