Movements That Occur at Joints

Flexion- Bending part of a joint as that the angle between them decreases
Extension- Straightening parts of a joint so that the angle between them increases

Dorsiflexion- Bending the foot upward
Plantar Flexion- Bending the foot downward

Hyperextension- excess extension of the parts at a joint, beyond the anatomical position.
Ex: Bending the head back beyond the upright position.

Abduction- Moving a part AWAY from the midline.
Adduction- moving a part toward the midline.

Ex: twisting the head from side to side
Rotation- moving a part around an axis. Ex: twisting the head from side to side Circumduction- moving a part so that its end follows a circular path Ex: Moving the finger in a circular motion without moving the hand.

Pronation- turning the hand so that the palm is downward or facing posteriorly.
Supination- Turning the hand so that the palm is upward or facing anteriorly.

Eversion- Turning the foot so that the sole faces laterally.
Inversion- Turning the foot so that the sole faces medially.

Retraction- Moving a part backward
Protraction- Moving a part forward.

Elevation- raising a part
Ex: shrugging the shoulders Depression- Lowering a part Ex: Drooping the shoulders
