There are 3 theories… Arrhenius (most common) Bronsted-Lowry Lewis
3
Arrhenius Bronsted-Lowry Lewis Theory includes more chemical reactions.
4
Arrhenius (most common): an acid gives H + and a base gives OH - Hydrochloric acid H + + Cl - Sodium hydroxide Na + + OH -
5
But NH 3 in water is basic.. NH 3 + H 2 O NH 4 + + OH - base acid proton acceptor proton donor
6
Conjugate Acid Conjugate Base
7
Bronsted-Lowry: an acid is a proton (H + ) donor and a base is a proton acceptor
8
Bronsted base acid Bronsted acid base
9
Bronsted base acid Bronsted acid base
10
Bronsted base acid Bronsted acid base AMPHOTERIC
11
But what if no protons are being donated or accepted?
12
What is being donated and accepted?
13
Electron Pair Acceptor Electron Pair Donor Lewis Acid Lewis Base
14
Lewis: An acid is an electron pair acceptor and a base is an electron pair donor
15
Here’s another example…
16
Use HCl (g) + H 2 O to show all three theories.
