Ongoing/Year-Long Skills I can spell words that I use and read often or are tricky to spell. I can write in print and cursive so that others can read what I write.

“I Can” Unit 1 I can combine sentences and thoughts into a compound sentence joined by a comma and a joining word (conjunction). I can use a semicolon to combine sentences.* I can make my sentences more interesting by using introductory phrases or clauses.* I can write and speak in sentences that have subjects and verbs that agree, have thoughts in logical order, and have describing words in the correct place in the sentence. I can recognize and edit incomplete sentences and run- on sentences. I can use correct punctuation at the end of a sentence. I can combine sentences into a single sentence that has more than one subject or verb. *This CFU/SPI is not taught in the textbook…use other resources.

“I Can” Unit 2 I can identify and use common and proper nouns. I can identify and use nouns that are singular, plural, and possessives I can identify and use predicate nouns. I can identify and use subject and object pronouns.

“I Can” Unit 8 I can describe the meaning of… figurative language main idea prompt I can pick a topic to write about. I can use graphic organizers (listing, clustering, story maps, webs). I can choose the best supporting sentence in a paragraph. I can write my sentences differently to make them more interesting to the reader (syntactic variety). I can write using vivid and figurative language. I can write using time-order and transitional words. I can write a paragraph that has a topic sentence, supporting details, and a conclusion. I can write my paragraphs in sequential order. I can give my writing a good title. I can revise my writing to make my ideas more clear. I can use the Tennessee Writing Assessment rubric to evaluate my own writing and the writing of others. I can use correct page format, paragraphs, margins, indentations, titles. I can use the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing/proofing, evaluating, and publishing. I can write within a given time limit. I can write to respond to a narrative prompt.
