pH SW classify substances according to their pH by conducting a lab activity. SW explain the relationship between values on the pH scale by using scientific notation.

How is pH measured? Concentration of hydrogen (H+) ions in a solution. “pH” = the power of Hydrogen Litmus paper = measures the pH

What is the range on the pH scale for ACIDS? Substances with a pH 6 and below. Lower the number, stronger the acid.

What is the range on the pH scale for BASES? Substances with a pH of 8 and above. Higher the number, stronger the base.

What is a substance considered to be if it is neither an acid or a base? pH around 7 (neutral) Example: “pure water”

What is the difference between the numbers on the pH scale? There is a 10-fold difference.

What does the negative exponent indicate? That the number is less than one.
