Lesson 1-2 Exponents and Order of Operations
Vocabulary To Simplify a numerical expression, you replace it with its simplest name. EXAMPLE: 2 * * (8+3) An exponent tells how many times a number, the base, is used as a factor. A power has two parts, a base and an exponent. EXAMPLE: Which is the base? Which is the exponent?

Order of Operations Rule 1: Simplify all operations inside parentheses. Rule 2: Simplify all exponents, working from left to right. Rule 3: Perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right. Rule 4: Perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right.
