Pine View School’s Environmental Challenge School-wide PBL for the School Year 2008 – 2009

Goals:Goals: For students, faculty and staff to become better educated in environmental issues. For students, faculty and staff to act on making our environment better for present and future generations. For students, faculty and staff to share their knowledge with the community. For students to experience hands on learning through project-based opportunities and interdisciplinary/multi-grade level activities.

End Products Culmination of learning experience by designating one day during Earth Week to showcase student products (looking at Apr. 22 as the date). Better understanding of current environmental issues. Project-based learning and interdisciplinary learning across campus. Student-driven projects and products. Positive environmental impact. Improve relationship with our community. Multi-grade level opportunities.

Some ideas of products Plastic water bottle mountain – one day’s collection of water bottles to be displayed on campus. Trash-less lunch. Field trips to local resources: landfill, water treatment and waste water treatment facilities. Speakers from various agencies to speak to students and staff. Solar power demonstrations.

Native plant landscaping. Water and electrical usage on campus and homes. Trash and recycling on campus and homes. Wider involvement in county sponsored projects such as Beach Clean Up. Bring awareness of small things people can do to lessen their environmental impact. Participation in ENERGY LAB.

Continuation of sale of cloth bags by G3. Mentorships with scientific community (Mote Marine Lab, Selby Gardens, Sarasota County Environmental Services, Coastal Wildlife Club, Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program). Recycling other materials such as styro foam, plastic rings, can tabs. Promotion for a healthier environment through actions such as writing letters of concern to local newspapers and politicians. Writing articles for local publications making community members aware of Pine View’s impact.
