1 Lesson 3 Measuring with SI and Metric Units

2 Units of Measurement There are two types of units:
SI Units There are two types of units: fundamental (or base) units; derived units.

3 There are 7 Fundamental (Base) SI Units
Powers of ten are used for convenience with smaller or larger units in the SI system.

4 Common Non-SI Units Physical Quantity Name of Unit Abbreviation Volume
Liter L Temperature Celsius oC Energy Calorie cal

5 Units of Measurement SI and Metric System Utilize prefixes
Powers of ten are used for convenience with smaller or larger units. Selected Prefixes used in SI System

6 Linear Measurement

7 Linear Measurement Measurement of Distance from place to place Size Measuring Equipment Ruler Meter Stick Tape measure LASER

8 Volume Measurement

9 Volume Measurement Measurement of How much space an object takes up How much capacity Measuring Equipment Graduated cylinder Ruler

10 Units of Measurement Volume

11 Units of Measurement Volume
The units for volume are given by (units of length)3. SI unit for volume is 1 m3. We usually use 1 mL = 1 cm3. Other volume units: 1 L = 1 dm3 = 1000 cm3 = 1000 mL.

12 Mass Measurement

13 Mass Measurement Measurement of How much matter something has Measuring Equipment Balance

14 Temperature Measurement

15 Temperature A measurement of:
Average kinetic energy of the particles of matter Measuring equipment Thermometer Three temperature scales: Kelvin Scale Celsius Scale Fahrenheit Scale
