Reconstruction – the South’s long, difficult rebuilding period after the Civil War Suffrage – the right to vote Immigration – moving to a country to live Entrepreneur – a person who manages a business or industry Depression – a period during which buisness slowed down or closed and many people lost their jobs Reform – a change for the better Strike – a protest against working conditions Infamy – a very bad reputation Muckrakers - writers who dug up dirt or uncovered problems in big businesses

W.E.B DuBois – African American leader who helped found NAACP Andrew Carnegie – entrepreneur who built a steel empire Nellie Bly – Journalist who traveled the world and wrote about difficult living conditions in jails and mental hospitals George Marshall – Army chief who expanded the U.S. Army Franklin D. Roosevelt – President during the Great Depression, created the New Deal
