GETTING THE MOST OUT OF WHAT YOU READ FOR CLASS OR ON A TEST What do I know already about the person, place, and things that I am going to read about? Can (am I able) I picture any part of this in my mind? As I read, can I link this new material to my own knowledge or experiences? Can (am I able) I logically figure out questions that I do not know the answer to? BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING, STOP AND THINK….AND TALK TO YOUR BRAIN….. This helps you to learn quicker, better, longer….

Read the section or the question, what next? Talk to brain- FORCE BRAIN TO PICTURE WHAT READ Say “ stop fighting, BRAIN, about having to read ”. You do not have to (nor will you) like everything you have do…… YODA: “ Try not, do or do not… ” Success or failure?

Before we start… Background Knowledge (like directions) VILLAGE SOCIETY- Mixture towns and country people -recognizes one government keeping order, and bringing justice for all. TRIBAL SOCIETY- Central government NOT most important. Recognizes TRIBE (extended family), family most important dispenser of justice. Anyone without tribe- dead or a slave.

What do you think the Arabian Peninsula Was Like in the 7 th Century AD? Forests and vineyards? Part of Eastern Roman Empire? Village culture- One Strong Religious Ruler? Desert tribal society-made living - trade and raising goats/ sheep.

Who were the Arabic people during the 7 th century? Part of a strong empire-- one strong leader. Monotheistic group believed that God ruled everything. Desert nomads worshipped one powerful god. Nomads and city dwellers, polytheistic, and a tribal society.

Who do you think Muhammad was? Part of royal family, particularly powerful? Scholar ancient Bagdad? Part of the tribal council/ ruler? Priest in Bagdad? Orphan-uncle tribal leader-protected him?

Who was Muhammad? Highly Educated Teacher? Village priest? Tax collector for the Romans? Illiterate (could not read and write) caravan (camels/donkeys carry goods) trader?

How did Muhammad become a prophet? Applied for the job? Approached by a priest? Saw all kinds of spirits? Meditated in cave- saw angel of God (Allah) who told him to “ proclaim ” one God….and His message…..

What was Mecca like then? Tribal Trading oasis city Religious center (Kaaba held 360 idols-1 for each tribe) Large trade in idols Muhammad says that there was only one god..Allah
