A Readability Formula NEXT FLESCH-KINCAID GRADE LEVEL READABILITY FORMULA In 1948, Rudolph Flesch, an author, and a supporter of Plain English Movement, created the Reading Ease Readability Formula. This formula tests the ease or difficulty with which a document may be read. In 1976 the US Navy modified the Reading Ease formula to produce a grade-level score. The Flesh-Kincaid Readability Formula This formula is based on two items: 1. The average number of words used per sentence. 2. The average number of syllables per word.
