Third Grade Rocks ! A study of three different kinds of rocks Created by: Denise T. Cox, Corley Elementary School, Lawrenceville, GA
3
What are sedimentary rocks?
4
Sedimentary Rocks How They are Made Wind and water break down the earth Bits of earth settle in lakes and rivers Layers are formed and build up Pressure and time turn the layers to rock
5
2 Types of Sedimentary Rocks ShaleLimestone Go to Igneous Rocks
6
Shale is a Sedimentary Rock Shale Shale rocks are sedimentary rocks which were formed from clay that is compacted together by pressure.
7
Shale is used to make bricks.
8
Some baseball diamonds use shale rocks.
9
Shale is used for pathways, driveways, and landscaping, too. Pathways and landscaping Driveways
10
Limestone is a Sedimentary Rock Limestone Limestone is a sedimentary rock which was formed from the mineral calcite which came from seas and lakes that dried up and from sea animal shells.
11
Limestone is used in concrete.
12
Limestone is used for buildings.
13
Limestone is used in toothpaste, antacids and face powder, too. toothpaste antacids face powder
14
Igneous Rock forming What are igneous rocks?
15
Igneous Rocks What are They? Fire Rocks Formed underground by trapped, cooled magma Formed above ground when volcanoes erupt and magma cools
16
2 Types of Igneous Rocks GranitePumice Go to Metamorphic Rocks
17
Granite is an Igneous Rock Granite Granite rocks are igneous rocks which were formed by slowly cooling pockets of magma that were trapped beneath the earth's surface.
18
Granite is used for buildings. Georgia’s capitol is made of Georgia granite.
19
Stone Mountain is made of granite.
20
Monuments and household items are made of granite. Washington Monument Granite countertops
21
Pumice is an Igneous Rock Pumice Pumice rocks are igneous rocks which were formed when lava cooled quickly above ground. This rock is so light, that many pumice rocks will actually float in water.
22
Because this rock is so light, it is often used as a decorative landscape stone. Landscape boulders Landscape rocks
23
Ground to a powder, it is used as an abrasive in polish compounds and in Lava© soap. Lava bath soap Furniture cleaner
24
Pumice stones are also used to smooth rough skin on your feet. Smoothes skin
25
What are metamorphic rocks?
26
Metamorphic Rocks What are They? Rocks that have changed They were once igneous or sedimentary Pressure and heat changed the rocks
27
2 Types of Metamorphic Rocks Marble Slate Go to the end of the show
28
Marble is a metamorphic rock Marble Marble is a metamorphic rock that is formed when limestone is changed.
29
Marble comes in many colors.
30
Marble is used to make buildings.
31
Statues and household items are also made from marble. Bathroom sink fountain
32
Slate is a metamorphic rock Slate Slate is a metamorphic rock that is formed when shale had low heat and a little pressure on it.
33
Slate can be any color but is mostly found in gray or black. When it is broken, it splits into layers.
34
Slate is used to make roofs on houses.
35
Slate is used for stepping stones and floors.
36
Slate was also used for chalkboards and pool tables. chalkboardPool table
37
Click on the rocks for a fun activity. You will test some rocks to see if they float and find some other information about them. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks2bitesize/science/activities/rocks_soils_fs.shtml

Congratulations! You Rock! You completed this rockin’ research project! Thank you to Rock Hounds for the rock formation animations! http://sln.fi.edu/fellows/payton/rocks/create/index.html
