What is EQAO? n Standardized test based on the Ministry Expectations administered by the Province in Grade 3 and 6 (Education Equality and Accountability Office) n Assessment tests READING, WRITING and MATHEMATICS n Assesses student’s learning up to their current grade level (i.e. Grade 3 EQAO assesses the learning completed between Grades k-3)

How are EQAO Results Used n Gives parents, teachers, principals, and school boards information about how students performed in reading, writing, and mathematics n Provides data to make plans for future improvement at the school and board level n Results are NOT included in report cards and DO NOT affect student progress in the classroom

Differences Between a Classroom Assessment and EQAO Assessment Classroom Assessment n assessment for learning n based on where the student is with respect to the Ontario Curriculum expectations n a variety of accommodations based on student needs - greater teacher support n a variety of tools, strategies, approaches and formats EQAO Assessment n assessment of learning n based on the Grade 3 Ontario Curriculum expectations n prescribed timed tasks n limited accommodations based on EQAO criteria n written responses only n independent demonstration

Classroom Supports n Using previous EQAO Student exemplars as examples and learning tools in the classroom n Sharing and deconstructing the EQAO terms with the students n Provide opportunities for students to practise answering multiple-choice questions and develop strategies such as eliminating answer choices. n Learning Goals and Success Criteria in all classrooms

How can I support my child in writing the test? n The best way to support your child in writing the test is by supporting his or her success at school throughout the year. n Encourage them to share their thoughts and opinions about texts and experiences n Discuss what your child is learning at school daily n Remind them that trying their best is the most important thing

How can I help them in the days before the test? n Test dates are on June 2 nd, 3 rd & 4 th. n Ensure they have plenty of sleep n Ensure they have a healthy lunch and a good breakfast n Ensure any appointments are not scheduled during the test dates

What is EQAO Looking for in Reading? n Answering the question using R-restate (using words from the question) A- answer (clear and easily understood) S- support (best examples from the text) E- explain (relate to something theme related)

What EQAO is Looking for in WRITING n Ideas (Showing statements) n Organization (forms of writing) n Voice (personality & point of view) n Word Choice (use of dictionary & thesaurus) n Sentence Fluency (a variety of sentence structures) n Conventions (grammar, punctuation & spelling)

What EQAO is Looking for in MATH n Answer the question! n Justify answers using logical reasoning n Communication through pictures, numbers and words n Apply learned knowledge to solve multi- step problems n Demonstrate understanding in a variety of forms
