CT Standards Sound and light are forms of energy. Sound is a form of energy that is produced by the vibration of objects and is transmitted by the vibration of air and objects. – Generalize that vibrating objects produce sound if the vibrations are transferred from the object through another material (e.g., air, a solid, or a liquid). – Demonstrate how the loudness, pitch and quality/timbre of sound can be varied. – Design and conduct investigations to determine factors that affect pitch. – Describe the properties of materials that reflect or absorb sound. – Construct simple musical instruments (e.g., rubber band guitars, drums, etc.) that produce sounds with various pitches, volume and timbres.

What are Waves?

How Sound is Formed 1.Molecules are distubed. 2.The disturbance continues from the source to your ear. 3.It becomes a sound once it is heard. Compressed Molecules Decompressed Molecules

Pitch How is the pitch changed in the drum? How does Rebecca learn about the different pitches? Why does she get to touch the drum?

Energy Transfer and Transformations – What is the role of energy in our world? 5.1 - Sound and light are forms of energy. Light is a form of energy that travels in a straight line and can be reflected by a mirror, refracted by a lens, or absorbed by objects. Students are given the challenge of creating three instruments for a band. They need to create different sounds, pitches, and be able to amplify the sound. After watching this video, children should be able to define the bold words and come up with different ways to change the pitch of a sound.

Pitch How do the children create sound using a drinking straw? What do they compare the straw to? How do they change the sound of the straw? What do you notice about the changes?

Measuring Sound

How Loud Is It? 1.How is sound measured? 2.Is there a sound level where sounds become dangerous? 3.What are some benchmark measurements?

Frenquency: Energy Transfer and Transformations – What is the role of energy in our world? 5.1 - Sound and light are forms of energy. Sound is a form of energy that is produced by the vibration of objects and is transmitted by the vibration of air and objects. B 17. Describe the factors that affect the pitch and loudness of sound produced by vibrating objects.

CENTERS 1. Hand out center packets and show the materials for each center. 2. Demonstrate how to correctly use the tools. 3. Model how to keep notes or observations on each of the centers.
