Chemical Reactions
2
4 Basic Types of Chemical Rxns Synthesis Decomposition Single Replacement Double Replacement
3
Synthesis Reaction Two or more simple substances combine to form a new, more complex substance. A + B ---> C
4
Synthesis Reactions Example: Na + Cl ----> NaCl Corrosion of metals are synthesis rxns.
5
Decomposition Reactions A complex substance breaks down into two or more simpler substances. Can you think of a decomposition reaction in biology?
6
Decomposition Reactions C ---> A + B Write an equation - Calcium Carbonate decomposes into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide.
7
Single-Replacement Reaction An uncombined element replaces an element that is part of a compound A + BX ---> AX + B Example: Sodium + water ---> Sodium hydroxide + hydrogen
8
Double-Replacement Reaction Different atoms in two different compounds replace each other. AX + BY ---> AY + BX MgCO 3 + 2 HCl ---> MgCl 2 + H 2 CO 3 The carbonic acid decomposes into water and carbon dioxide.
