Topic: Polarity of Water Date: 9/21/2010 and 9/22/10 Outcome: TSWBAT explain why water is classified as a polar molecule by diagramming and explaining its structure. Outcome: TSWBAT explain why water is classified as a polar molecule by diagramming and explaining its structure. Divide your notebook paper - Questions/Main Ideas Notes
2
What is water made of? Hydrogen – 2 Atoms Oxygen – 1 Atom
3
What is the molecular formula? H2OH2OH2OH2O
4
What bond holds water together? Covalent bonds form when the hydrogen atoms and oxygen atoms SHARE electrons to create a water molecule.
5
What does a water molecule look like? Like Mickey Mouse!
6
The geometric shape? Tetrahedron
7
How is a water molecule charged? The uneven sharing of electrons makes the water molecule positively charge on one end and negatively charged on the other end. The opposite charges make water a polar molecule (like a bar magnet with a north and south pole).
8
Why is water called a polar molecule? Water is a polar molecule because it has an unequal distribution of electrical charges.
9
How do water molecules attach to each other? Water molecules are attracted to each other by hydrogen bonds, a weak chemical attraction between polar molecules.
