2 Lets review what a topic sentence is: The topic sentence is the main idea of the paragraph. This sentence lets the reader know what the paragraph is about. Usually you will find the topic sentence at the beginning of the paragraph.

3 What is my topic sentence? Build a nest Lay eggs in the nest Sit on the eggs Gather food for the hungry babies TOPIC SENTENCE: A mother bird does many things.

4 What is my topic sentence? Built a sand castle Ran in and out of the waves Rode a boogie board Flew a kite TOPIC SENTENCE: We had lots of fun at the beach.

5 What is my topic sentence? Fetch a stick Bring in the newspaper Protect the house TOPIC SENTENCE: My dog can do many things.

6 Don’t forget… Your topic sentence is the main idea of your paragraph. Start your topic sentence with a capital letter. End your topic sentence with either a., !, or ?
