1 GIVE 3 REASONS FOR THE ENOURMOUS GROWTH OF THE SUBURBS IN THE 1950’S: 1. Veterans had access to low-interest loans. 2.The Highway Act greatly expanded the highway system allowing for easier commutes to jobs in the cities. 3.Population expanded greatly due to post-war “baby boom”, more families started and had more children.

2 WHY WERE AMERICANS ON A BUYING SPREE IN THE 1950’S? - THEY WERE SECURE IN THEIR JOBS AND CONFIDENT OF INCREASING INCOMES. - THEY WERE TRYING TO “KEEP UP WITH THE JONESES”.

3 WHAT “EXPERIENCE” OR LIFESTYLE DID T.V. SHOWS IN THE 1950’S OFTEN REFLECT? IT OFTEN PORTRAYED THE WHITE MIDDLE-CLASS SUBURBAN EXPERIENCE.

4 WAS SEGREGATION BY RACE LEGAL IN THE SOUTH IN THE EARLY 1950’S? YES

5 WHAT IMPORTANT CIVIL RIGHTS CHANGE DID THE “BROWN VS. BOARD OF EDUCATION OF TOPEKA KANSAS” BRING ABOUT? “BROWN VS. BOARD” brought about the integration of the public school System.

6 WHAT EVENT SPURRED THE MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA BUS BOYCOTT? Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger. She was arrested and convicted of violating segregation laws.

7 WHO WAS THE YOUNG, DYNAMIC MINISTER IN CHARGE OF THE BOYCOTT? He was Martin Luther King, Jr.

8 WHAT LIFESTYLE DID THE “BEAT” WRITERS AND POETS CHALLENGE IN THE 1950’S? They challenged the lifestyles of the middle-class.
