Determining the theme of a work of literature can often be tricky, but here are a few tried and true tips for the novice theme-writer:

1. Theme is the lesson or moral of a work of literature. It is often what the protagonist learns.

2. Since “theme” is a lesson-learned, it can NEVER, EVER be just one word. (Nevereverevereverever....)

3. It MUST be ONE COMPLETE SENTENCE.

4. A theme is typically “universal,” which means it can apply to a variety of texts.

Examples of common themes: 1.Love conquers all.

Examples of common themes: 2. If a person works hard, he/she can achieve his/her dreams.

Examples of common themes: 3. Never give up!

Examples of common themes: 4. You reap what you sow.
