12. Mixtures Of Strong Acids and Bases (Hebden p. 141 – 143)
2
Remember c 1 v 1 = c 2 v 2 Calculate the pH resulting from mixing 75.0 mL of 0.100 M NaOH with 85.0 mL of 0.750 M HCl.
3
1st Step: Dilution Calculations for [H 3 O + ] & [OH - ]
4
Is [H 3 O + ] or [OH - ] in excess? Since neutraliztion rx: H 3 O + = OH - 2H 2 O the larger amount of the two is in excess If [H 3 O + ] in excess, then rx is acidic If [OH - ] in excess, then rx is basic
5
[H 3 O + ] in excess [H 3 O + ] - [OH - ] = [H 3 O + ] excess Determine pH value from the excess amount Remember pH + pOH = 14
6
[OH - ] in excess [OH - ] - [H 3 O + ] = [OH - ] excess Determine pOH from the excess amount
