3 1st Step: Dilution Calculations for [H 3 O + ] & [OH - ]

4 Is [H 3 O + ] or [OH - ] in excess? Since neutraliztion rx: H 3 O + = OH - 2H 2 O the larger amount of the two is in excess If [H 3 O + ] in excess, then rx is acidic If [OH - ] in excess, then rx is basic

5 [H 3 O + ] in excess [H 3 O + ] - [OH - ] = [H 3 O + ] excess Determine pH value from the excess amount Remember pH + pOH = 14

6 [OH - ] in excess [OH - ] - [H 3 O + ] = [OH - ] excess Determine pOH from the excess amount
