Possessive with Gerunds Advanced Level Summit 1A By teacher Angela Carvalho Araújo/ 2012
2
Angela Araújo - CMF - 2012 Do you mind if I close the door? Would you mind if I closed the door? Question used to ask for permission.
3
Angela Araújo - CMF - 2012 Do you mind my singing? Use possessive before a gerund when you want to indicate the doer of the action. E.g. The kids’ singing was too loud. Your constant arguing is bugging me.
4
Angela Araújo - CMF - 2012 Let’s read more examples I can’t stand my students’ talking while I explain grammar rules! Chris’s talking on his cell phone during meetings is anoying his boss. Maria’s smoking is worrying her boyfriend. A: “So, Ted phoned you yesterday?” B: “Yes. I still can’t believe his calling me up after all this time!”
5
Angela Araújo - CMF - 2012 Attention: Informal spoken English: A noun or an object is often used instead of a possessive. Observe: E.g. I can understand Hugo being annoyed. (standard = Hugo’s) I can’t accept them ignoring me. (standard = their)
6
Angela Araújo - CMF - 2012 Now observe: I really appreciate them looking after me so well. (their) What happens if the object is complex? We do not use possessive form. I really enjoyed Aron and his sister showing me around.(their)
