Warm Up Imagine a police officer knocks on your door and say he wants to search your home. Do you have to let them in? Why or why not?

Objective I will analyze Amendments 4-8 of the Bill Of Rights by evaluating their importance in modern American life in a short constructed response.

Amendment IV People are protected from illegal search and seizure by the government. - Government must have warrant Government must have probable cause to issue a warrant - Government must have evidence

Amendment V People cannot be forced to testify against themselves Double Jeopardy - No person may be tried for the same crime twice if found innocent

Amendment VI Right to a lawyer Right to a speedy trial Right to trial before impartial jury of peers Government must inform people of the charges against them

Amendment VII Right to jury trial in certain civil, not criminal, trials

Amendment VIII No excessive bail No excessive fines No cruel and unusual punishments - Punishment must fit the crime

Assignment Divide class into 5 groups. 1 for each amendment Each group will describe their amendment in their own words and present 3 real world examples for modern life Have each group share out and discuss Each student completes a graphic organizer presenting each of Amendments 4-8 in their own words as groups share out

Exit Ticket Write a short constructed response evaluating the importance of each amendment in modern American life. Sentence Starter: Amendments 4-8 of the Bill Of Rights are still very important in todays modern society.
