1 Aim: How can we distinguish between speed, velocity and acceleration?
Movement Aim: How can we distinguish between speed, velocity and acceleration?

2 What is movement? Movement occurs when an object moves from one location to a different location. Movement can happen in 1, 2 or 3 dimensions As we learned yesterday, we can measure either the distance or the displacement of the movement.

3 Speed When movement occurs it takes time
If we want to know how fast an object is moving we divide the distance traveled by the time it takes. We call this speed Speed does not have a direction because distance doesn’t have a direction. Is it a scalar or a vector?

4 Speed (example) A car drives 300 meters west, then 400 meters south in 20 minutes. What is the distance covered? What is the average speed of the car?

5 Velocity Velocity is a vector quantity (magnitude and direction)
Velocity is the rate at which an object changes its position. If we divide the change in position, or displacement, by time, we get the average velocity. Velocity is measured in meters per second (m/s)

6 Velocity (example) A car drives 300 meters west, then 400 meters south in 20 minutes. What is the car’s displacement? What is the average velocity of the car?

7 Acceleration Velocity is the rate of change of position.
Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity. Remember, velocity includes both a magnitude AND a direction. Changing the magnitude (how fast or slow you are moving) OR the direction requires an acceleration

8 Acceleration (continued)
Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity, so… Acceleration is measured in meters per second per second (m/s/s or m/s2) In other words, 1 m/s2 means that each second velocity changes by 1 m/s.
