MathOnMonday® Presents: Building Math Courage® A program designed for Adults or Kids who have struggled to learn their Math in the traditional classroom! Learning Your Tens AND Fives! Dirk M. Horton dirk@mathonmonday.com

The Tens Pattern Let’s count by 10 by adding 10. Click your mouse to see the pattern develop. + 10 = 20 2 x 10 + 10 = 50 5 x 10 + 10 = 60 6 x 10 + 10 = 70 7 x 10 + 10 = 80 8 x 10 + 10 = 90 9 x 10 + 10 = 30 3 x 10 + 10 = 40 4 x 10 10 1 x 10 MathOnMonday© (March 2000) To multiply a number by 10, you put a 0 to the right of that number!

Let’s count by 5 by adding 5. Click your mouse to see the pattern develop. + 5 = 10 2 x 5 + 5 = 25 5 x 5 + 5 = 30 6 x 5 + 5 = 35 7 x 5 + 5 = 40 8 x 5 + 5 = 45 9 x 5 + 5 = 15 3 x 5 + 5 = 20 4 x 5 5 1 x 5 MathOnMonday© (March 2000) To multiply a number by 5, you x it by 10 and then divide by 2 The Fives Pattern

5 x 4 = 5 x 2 = 5 x 3 = 5 x 5 = 5 x 6 = 5 x 7 = 5 x 9 = 5 x 8 = X Ten Pattern 40÷2 = 20 20÷2 = 10 30÷2 = 15 90÷2 = 45 50÷2 = 25 60÷2 = 30 70÷2 = 35 80÷2 = 40 Click your mouse to find the relationship between the x 10 pattern and the x 5 pattern. MathOnMonday© (March 2000) X 10 The x 5 pattern = the x 10 pattern ÷ 2! To multiply a number by 5, you multiply by 10 and then divide by 2! X Five Pattern The Fives Pattern

10 x 4 = 5 x 4 = 10 x 2 = 5 x 2 = 10 x 3 = 5 x 3 = 10 x 5 = 5 x 5 = 10 x 6 = 5 x 6 = 10 x 7 = 5 x 7 = 10 x 9 = 5 x 9 = 10 x 8 = 5 x 8 = 40 20 30 90 50 60 70 45 80 10 25 20 15 40 30 35 Click your mouse to see that you learned your 10s and 5s. Click for the problem, think about the x 10’s answer, click to check, and think about the x 5’s answer, click again. MathOnMonday© (March 2000)

10 x 4 = 5 x 4 = 10 x 2 = 5 x 2 = 10 x 3 = 5 x 3 = 10 x 5 = 5 x 5 = 10 x 6 = 5 x 6 = 10 x 7 = 5 x 7 = 10 x 9 = 5 x 9 = 10 x 8 = 5 x 8 = 40 20 30 90 50 60 70 45 80 10 25 20 15 40 30 35 MathOnMonday© (March 2000) Well done! You are learning your Tens AND your Fives! Practice a few times and you be an expert!
