3. Palio- Key Terms  Contrada – Zone/neighborhood in Siena, Italy. There are 17 contrade.  Fantino – the horse jockey, who rides the horse on behalf of his/her contrada.  Cavallo – the horse itself, which are randomly assigned to each contrada.  Piazza del Campo – the main piazza in Siena where the Palio di Siena occurs.

Key Terms cont.  Lo Stemma – the symbolic crest of the contrada, often seen on flags or banners.  Sfilata Storica – the historic parade in Siena preceding the races.  Palio (Drapellone) – the prized banner given to the winning contrada.  Sbandieratore – flag bearer during the festivities.  Contradaioli- people that live in a contrada

The Palio comes to Ridge  Form a contrada and sign up on Monday in Room 210 throughout the day  As a contrada develop a marketing/spirit campaign.  March 13, 14, 15 advertise and promote your contrada  Friday, March 15 during lunch periods students at Ridge can vote for their favorite contrada  Friday, March 15 – PALIO after school meet in the Atrium and get ready to RACE!!!!
