THE ROLE OF RED CROSS VOLUNTEERS DURING DISASTERS

A VOLUNTEER A person who out of free will does an activity that benefit vulnerable people without expecting any payment.

AN EMERGENCY An extraordinary situation where there are serious and immediate threat to social order, human life and the environment.

THE ROLE OF VOLUNTEERS DURING EMERGENCY Guided by The Fundamental Principles of The Red Cross Movement, Red Cross Volunteers assume the following role during Conduct a rapid assessment of the situation to ascertain the magnitude of the situation to properly respond.

THE ROLE CONT. Administer First Aid to any victim before the arrival of Qualified Medical Personnel Register all victims in close collaboration with partners for records, response and security purpose. Liaise with the appropriate stakeholders to provide temporal shelter for victims.

THE ROLE CONT. Provide the required food to the victims.( wet ration is recommended during emergencies) Provide appropriate clothing for the victims to avoid more exposure to health problems. Work in close collaboration with Health authorities to make sure the health situation of the victims is taken care of. Organize periodical health talks on matters affecting their livelihood.

IN COMPLEX EMERGENCY SITUATIONS, The Red Cross Volunteers administer First Aid having cognizance of their Danger Zone. Evacuate the wounded and sick to a safer zone. Provide Relief supply Collect and bury the dead ( keep a register of the dead, mark and register the graves)

COMPLEX SITUATION CONT. Organize with the authorities cooperation or agreement of an official information regarding P.O.W. or detainees- processing of tracing requests in cooperation with The Central Tracing Agency. Welfare and aid care for children, expectant mothers, the aged and the infirm.

THE ROLE OF RED CROSS VOLUNTEERS IN THE COMMUNITY. The red cross volunteers have a vital role to play in the socio economic development of the communities As agents of change, their role in the community among other things include: Sensitize the communities on the Red Cross and help in the establishment of community groups Train the people on Community Based First Aid.

ROLES IN THE COMMUNITY CONT. Embark on environmental sanitation and encourage others to emulate. Organize skills trainings to burst the economic standard of the community Organize home visits to the old, sick and disabled in the community and encourage others to emulate Assist in the establishment of Disaster Preparedness Farms in the communities. Conduct First Aid coverages during major activities.

ROLE IN THE COMMUNITY CONT. Train and establish First Aid Posts in the communities. Conduct Participatory Vulnerability Assessments and guide the community to write Proposals to potential funders to fill the identified gaps. Take active part in all developmental activities in the communities.
