Purchasing an ASPAN membership buys you far more than a card and a journal. Your membership puts you in the driver’s seat of the profession of perianesthesia nursing. Are there issues in your workplace that concern or frustrate you? Do you need resources, information or people to help you clarify or change your practice, implement patient or staff safety measures? As a member you are represented by colleagues that you have chosen to serve you. These colleagues are open to your comments, questions, concerns. These colleagues make decisions that affect your practice. You also have the opportunity and responsibility to be a part of the process.
Willingness to Serve forms are available for members to use as a means of participation (both national and component level). The ASPAN Pres Elect reviews these and identifies members with the expertise and willingness to address certain issues; these members are appointed to committees and task forces (SWT’s). Members are needed for these committees; this is an excellent way to start becoming involved.

SPG’s – Specialty Practice Groups – membership driven; deal with a specific subject/focus related to perianesthesia. New groups are forming – usually a coordinator and co-coordinator. Most of the communication is done via , newsletter and may meet at national conference. ASPAN committees provide opportunities to participate where your passion is.
SWT-Strategic Work Teams-These are member driven and have a specific function such as bylaws, policy and procedure, data elements, component revitalization, environmental trends, National Conference. These are usually appointed positions

Competency Based Orientations for nurses & unlicensed assistive personnel
The money is also used to support research related to our practice. The Research and Evidence Based Practice Committees are not only doing the research but offering to help nurses at the local levels learn and participate in this area. The Clinical Practice Committee members answer literally 100s of questions yearly ( over 1500 last year!) from members and non-members both nationally and internationally now. They are responsible for revising our ASPAN Standards and Guidelines every two years to keep us current and evidence-based. Have you been on the new ASPAN Forums area of the website? There is ongoing dialogue about clinical practice topics all the time from members across the country—how are you handling this new challenge from TJC or other clinical issues?

ASPAN’s Development Committee is responsible for obtaining money for scholarships as well as promoting public awareness. The ASPAN Cookbook was a recent project that brought in money for scholarships for attaining personal educational goals, certification, and coming to National Conference. Networking opportunities with perianesthesia nurses from across the country and now the world are at your fingertips and being a VOICE for perianesthesia nursing with other professional organizations and in government is now a huge part of our professional organization.

ASPAN members receive reduced fee on certification exams
ABPANC-the American Board of PeriAnesthesia Nurse Certification, is a separate entity that provides two certifications, CPAN-Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse for Phase I nurses and CAPA-Certified Ambulatory PeriAnesthesia nurse for those practicing in the ambulatory arena. It is close partnership but has a separate Board of Directors, office personnel, and location in New York City. ASPAN’s headquarters are in New Jersey.
