Earthquakes happen wherever rocks move against or away from other rocks. This is typical of all plate boundaries. Mountains (fold-thrust type mountains) form wherever continental crust is involved in a collision Ocean trenches are formed by subduction.

Volcanoes happen only –at subduction zones –where plates spread apart, or –at hot spots (mantle plumes). Only in these locations do you have a consistent magma source.

Cross-Section Assignment Draw cross-sections (down to the asthenosphere) of the following margins: 1 2 3 5 1.Label plate names 2.Show and label any areas of mountain building and/or volcanism 3.Show and label where earthquakes would take place 4.Label subduction zones 5.Label the type(s) of plate boundaries 6.Label the speed and direction of plate motion 7.Label the crust types 4 Draw on blank, white paper.
