D ivine D isinfectan t G od s (1 Jn. 2:1-2) that ye sin not I.Johns Worthy Warning: that ye sin not The verb often means to perform some deed, by which the taint of guilt is removed. A man sins; at once he acquires the taint of sin; he needs some- thing, which, to use C.H. Dodds metaphor, will disinfect him from that taint and enable him once again to enter into the presence of God. William Barclay

D ivine D isinfectan t G od s (1 Jn. 2:1-2) The mercy seat was made of shittim wood (Ex. 25: 10). Shittim wood was hard and durable, resistant to insects and harsh weather. Symbolizes to the durability and incorruptible nature of our Savior. His sacrifice is sufficient for- ever and His life cannot be taken (Heb. 7:23-24). Heb 7:23-24 23 And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death: 24 But this man, because he continues ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Heb 7:23-24 23 And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death: 24 But this man, because he continues ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.

D ivine D isinfectan t G od s (1 Jn. 2:1-2) The mercy seat was over- laid with pure gold (Ex. 25:17). Gold was the most precious and valuable element of that day. Symbolizes the precious- ness Jesus. His life, His death, His blood, His word, His promises, etc., are precious. In him are found unsearchable riches (Eph. 3:8). Eph 3:8 8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; Eph 3:8 8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;

D ivine D isinfectan t G od s (1 Jn. 2:1-2) The mercy seat was a place of communion with God (Ex. 25:22). God promised to meet with the Israelites from above the mercy seat, between the two cherubims. Today we meet and com- mune with God through Christ. Jesus is the our way to the Father (Jn. 14:6; 1 Tim. 2:5; Heb. 10:19-22). John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

D ivine D isinfectan t G od s (1 Jn. 2:1-2) Atonement was made at the mercy seat (Lev. 16:15, 34). The blood of the sin-offering was taken within the veil once a year and sprinkled upon the mercy seat. Today Jesus is the sin- offering that appeases the wrath of God. Atonement is made by the blood of Christ (Rom. 5:10- 11). Rom 5:10-11 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. 11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. Rom 5:10-11 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. 11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

D ivine D isinfectan t G od s (1 Jn. 2:1-2) The mercy seat covered the law (Ex. 25:20-21). This symbolically covered the guilt of the people (Gal. 3:10-13, 22) Today our guilt is covered by the blood of Christ. Our sins are washed away by the blood of Christ and we stand before God as if we have never sinned (Eph. 1:4). Eph 1:4 4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Eph 1:4 4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
