Coaching Matrix Use the coaching matrix to determine your coaching approach. Assess each person against each task. Don’t fall into “patterns of behavior” which lead to over- or under- coaching.

Coaching Matrix S k i l l s / A b i l i t y Motivation / Confidence low high lowhigh Encourage Delegate Direct Teach

Supervisors as Coaches Special coaching issues because of the supervisor/employee relationship: –The coach is also the appraiser of performance. –The performance of the person being coached directly impacts the performance of the coach. –The coach is so proficient at the job of the person being coached it is “second nature” to them.

Potential Impacts Unrealistic expectations by the coach Unwillingness of employee to admit coaching needs Impatience and criticism by the coach Lowered confidence and self-esteem of the person being coached

These issues can be overcome by: Recognizing the person being coached isn’t you. Separating coaching activities from performance-management activities. Setting realistic goals with the person being coached.
