2 MLA - April 29, 2004 To paraphrase somebody – Cataloging is putting things away so that patrons can find them again If this takes a little creativity, then so what! At MBLWHOI, our patrons browse the OPAC, not the stacks, so our creativity is in the headings and authorities, not the classification numbers

4 MLA - April 29, 2004 Series Name - 440 Technically the 440 (or the 490) is supposed to be what’s on the piece. What’s traced is either a 440 or an 830. For some series which are important to us, we put the authorized heading in the 440, no matter what. It’s better for searching and display if all relevant items have it in the same tag.
