In Search of Active Ingredients- Chemical and Physical Changes
3
Essential Vocab Reactant a substance that undergoes a chemical change (ex- baking soda, vinegar) Product a new substance thats formed in a chemical change (ex- CO 2 )
4
Essential Vocab Inert Ingredients substances that do NOT react chemically with each other Active Ingredients substances that DO react chemically!
5
Todays Ingredients CaCl 2 - Calcium Chloride NaHCO 3 - Sodium Bicarbonate C 12 H 22 O 11 - Amylose Sugar NaCl- Sodium Chloride Solution= Phenol Red C 19 H 14 O 5 S- Phenolsulfonphthalein

Combined Reaction 1. Put 1 spoon of each substance in a baggie. 2. Fill the plastic vial with phenol and place it in the baggie without spilling it. 3. Zip the baggie closed and then mix the solution and the mixture together. 4. Mix the substances together well using your hands. 5. Record any evidence of a chemical change.
9
Today's Challenge du Jour: Figure out which of the substances in the mixture are chemically reactive and which are inert ingredients. Then you can do other experiments. (ex: Does the amount of substances make a difference?) Record all your data on the your individual chart. Beware of repetitions!
