HEAT TRANSFERS
2
HEAT TRANSFER - the transfer of thermal energy between substances due to a difference in their temperature
3
THERMAL ENERGY is the total of all the kinetic and potential energy of all the particles in a substance.
4
TEMPERATURE is a measurement of the average kinetic energy of the molecules in an object. It is measured with a thermometer. It is a measurement of the internal energy contained in an object.
5
As the temperature increases, so does thermal energy (because the kinetic energy of the particles increased).
6
Cup gets cooler while hand gets warmer
The flow of thermal energy (HEAT) always flows from warmer to cooler objects Ice gets warmer while hand gets cooler
7
Questions 1. What is thermal energy?
How do you measure thermal energy? What is heat? 4. How does thermal energy flow?
8
Insert video clip – conduction, convection & radiation
9
CONDUCTION is the transfer of heat through a material by direct contact.
10
CONVECTION is the transfer of heat in a fluid (gas or liquid) as a result of the movement of the fluid itself
11
RADIATION is the transfer of heat via electromagnetic waves through space
